Carlson Gracie
Carlson Gracie (1932–2006), son of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu founder Carlos Gracie, was born in Rio de Janeiro. He was a top vale tudo fighter in the 1950s and 60s and became one of the greatest jiu-jitsu coaches of all time. His Copacabana academy produced generations of champions, and teams such as Nova União, American Top Team and Brazilian Top Team trace their roots to him. His lineage: Mitsuyo Maeda → Carlos Gracie → Carlson Gracie.
Sensei Edson in Rio
Team Carvalho’s published history states that Sensei Edson Carvalho left for Rio de Janeiro in 1989 to fight. Bruno Carvalho’s personal biography confirms that Edson held a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under Carlson Gracie and includes him in the lineage Carlos Gracie → Carlson Gracie → Edson Carvalho → Bruno Carvalho. Neither of these sources gives the year Edson received that black belt, so no award year is stated here.
